The Problem

Spreadsheets and manual methods aren’t good enough

Cable sizing to BS7671 Appendix 4 is a multi-step process with interdependent checks, a stack of correction factors and a growing library of cable types. Most engineers are still doing it on spreadsheets - or worse, from memory.

Without CableSpec
  • Every BS7671 Appendix 4 check calculated by hand for every circuit
  • Correction factors looked up from tables and applied by hand - easy to miss or misapply
  • Spreadsheets with hardcoded mV/A/m values that may not match current BS7671 tables
  • No version control - impossible to tell which calculation applies to as-built conditions
  • VD formula applied without the reactive component for large conductors
  • Zs check calculated with the wrong disconnection time or wrong earthing type assumptions
  • Project schedules compiled manually from individual calculation sheets
  • No audit trail - can’t demonstrate when a calculation was done or by whom
With CableSpec
  • Every check in one calculation run - capacity, overload, VD, Zs and CPC, with PFC shown
  • Correction factors Ca, Cg, Cs and Cd applied automatically - plus Cf and Cc on the overload check
  • Ratings and mV/A/m from BS7671 Appendix 4 tables, with manufacturer data where BS7671 has none
  • Full version history on every circuit - every calculation timestamped and saved
  • Reactive VD formula (Ir·cosφ + Ix·sinφ) applied automatically for large conductors
  • Correct disconnection time and Zs limit selected per earthing system and circuit type
  • Circuit schedule generated automatically - landscape A4 with all key results
  • Every calculation versioned and timestamped, with the calculating engineer recorded

How It Works

From project setup to compliant schedule

CableSpec is structured around real-world design workflows. Define the supply parameters once at project level, then work through each circuit with the calculation engine handling all the BS7671 arithmetic.

1

Create a Project

Enter the project’s supply parameters - voltage, earthing system (TN-S, TN-C-S or TT), measured Ze and source. These apply automatically to every circuit in the project for Zs calculations.

2

Add Circuits & Calculate

Define each circuit’s design current, cable type, installation method, run length and protective device. Click Calculate - CableSpec runs every BS7671 check and selects the minimum compliant size.

3

Review & Export

Review the project schedule showing every circuit’s status. Download a per-circuit PDF calculation certificate, a full project PDF report, or an A4 landscape circuit schedule. Share the project with clients via a secure link.

Platform Features

Everything a professional cable sizing
workflow needs

Automatic Size Selection

Enter Ib, device and run length and CableSpec works up through the available cable sizes to find the smallest that passes every check. If no size passes, it tells you which check is failing, the smallest size that meets capacity and voltage drop, and what would fix it — an RCD, a lower device rating or a bigger CPC.

Circuit Presets

Start a circuit from a preset — ring final, lighting, EV charging, solar PV, motor, fire alarm, emergency lighting, heat pump or battery storage — with sensible defaults and the relevant regulation notes. Duplicate any circuit to start the next one.

Scenario Comparison

Run alternative calculations on the same circuit with different cable types, installation methods or protective devices. Compare results side by side to find the most efficient or practical option.

Calculation Version History

Every calculation is saved as a numbered, timestamped version with its results and the engineer who ran it. Reopen any earlier version to see how the design evolved — useful for CDM, design reviews and revisits.

Cable Route Manager

Define cable routes with one of 11 arrangements — bunched, enclosed, clipped, trays, ladder, buried direct or in ducts. CableSpec looks up the BS7671 grouping factor (Cg) for the number of circuits on the route, and flags every circuit on it for recalculation when the route changes.

Multi-Project Management

Organise work by project, each with its own supply parameters. Bulk recalculate all circuits in a project after changing Ze or earthing type. Project dashboard shows instant pass/fail/pending status at a glance.

Per-Circuit Calculation Certificate

Professional A4 PDF for each circuit: all inputs, every correction factor, each check result with its regulation reference, step-by-step VD and Zs working, prospective fault current, and an engineer declaration with name, date and your saved signature.

Project Schedule & Report

Print-ready A4 landscape circuit schedule showing all key results across the project. Full project PDF with a compliance summary, project details, engineer declaration and the circuit schedule. CSV export for external processing.

Secure Client Share Links

Share a read-only view of any project with clients, principal designers or reviewers. Links last 30 days, need no login on the receiving end, and can be revoked at any time from your project view.

Custom Report Branding

Upload your company or organisation logo. It appears automatically on circuit certificates, project reports and printed schedules, replacing the CableSpec wordmark with your own identity.

Amendment Version Tracking

Every circuit is stamped with the BS7671 amendment in force when it was last calculated. Circuits calculated under a previous amendment are flagged on the project view, certificate and share page.

Bulk Recalculate

Changed Ze or earthing system after preliminary design? One click re-runs the engine across all circuits in a project and shows a pass/fail summary on completion.

Common questions answered

Everything you need to know before getting started with CableSpec.

What BS7671 checks does CableSpec perform?
Every circuit is checked to BS7671:2018+A4:2026 Appendix 4: (1) Current-carrying capacity — Ib ≤ In and Ib ≤ Iz (Reg 433.1.1); (2) Overload protection — In ≤ Iz, with In ≤ 0.725 Iz for BS 3036 fuses and In ≤ 0.9 Iz for buried cables (Regs 433.1.201–203), and Reg 433.1.204 for ring finals; (3) Voltage drop — Appendix 4 §6.4, with the reactive component for larger conductors; (4) Earth fault loop impedance — Zs ≤ Zs max for the required disconnection time (Reg 411.3.2, Table 41.1), plus Ra × IΔn ≤ 50V on TT systems; (5) Protective conductor — the adiabatic equation with the device’s I²t let-through, or selection to Table 54.7. The prospective fault current at the load end is also calculated and a warning is raised if it exceeds the device’s breaking capacity. Ca, Cg, Cs and Cd (and the harmonic factor) are applied to the cable rating; Cf and Cc are applied to the overload check.
How does CableSpec choose the cable size?
CableSpec works up through the available sizes for the selected cable type and installation method, running every check at each size, and returns the smallest size that passes. If no size passes — for example because Ze alone already exceeds the maximum Zs — it reports the smallest size that meets capacity and voltage drop, identifies the failing check, and suggests remedies such as an RCD, a lower device rating or supplementary bonding.
Which protective devices are in the database?
Manufacturer BS EN 60898 MCBs from Hager, Schneider Electric, ABB, Eaton and Legrand (curves B, C and D) and Wylex and Crabtree (curves B and C), with I²t let-through data for the adiabatic check. Generic devices cover MCBs, BS 88-2 gG fuses (6–200A), BS 1361 fuses, BS 3036 semi-enclosed fuses, MCCBs (125–800A) and legacy BS 3871 Type 1–4 MCBs. Maximum Zs values follow BS7671 Table 41.3 (Uo × Cmin / Ia). For RCBOs, select the MCB curve and rating and add the RCD details to the circuit.
How does the voltage drop calculation work for three-phase circuits?
CableSpec holds BS7671’s three-phase ratings and line-to-line mV/A/m values separately from the single-phase values, and uses them directly for three-phase circuits — no conversion factor. The result is compared with the limit as a percentage of the project supply voltage. Cable types without a three-phase rating, such as flat twin & earth and 2-core SWA, can’t be selected for a three-phase circuit. The reactive formula (r·cosφ + x·sinφ) is applied wherever reactive mV/A/m data exists and the power factor is below unity.
Does CableSpec handle ring final circuits?
Yes. The current-carrying capacity check uses Reg 433.1.204: for a 30 or 32A device the cable must have Iz of at least 20A. Zs is calculated at the worst-case midpoint of the ring, Ze + (R1+R2)×L/4, temperature corrected, and an optional spur length adds its full (R1+R2). Voltage drop is calculated with the load at the midpoint (L/4). The ring R1+Rn value is also calculated and shown on the certificate for reference.
What happens when there is no I²t data for the protective device?
CableSpec first checks the CPC against the Table 54.7 selection rule (Reg 543.1.4), adjusted where the CPC and line conductor have different k values. If the CPC is smaller than that and the device has no I²t data, the protective conductor check can’t be completed and the circuit is given a “partial” status — capacity, voltage drop and Zs have passed, but the CPC still needs verifying. Selecting a manufacturer MCB with I²t data completes the check.
Does CableSpec support TT earthing systems?
Yes. TT projects use 0.2s disconnection for final circuits up to 32A (or up to 63A supplying socket-outlets) and 1s otherwise. Where an RCD is fitted, the maximum Zs is 50V / IΔn (Table 41.5) and Ra × IΔn ≤ 50V is checked (Reg 411.5.3) using the earth electrode resistance entered on the project — without Ra the Zs check fails until it is added. Without an RCD, CableSpec warns that fault protection relies on the overcurrent device, which is rarely achievable on TT.
